BIG DAMN HEROES, SIR!

In recent months I got into watching an old show called "Firefly". Joss Whedon introduced the world to an idea that Cowboys could exist in Space. There weren't 'aliens' so to speak, but when the Earth had been used up space missions resulted in the discovery of hundreds of new planets that were terraformed into new Earths. These New Earths ranged from barren wastelands to the highest of Technological advances. You follow the crew of a Firefly Class ship as they survive in the unruly galaxy the only way they know how. Wild West gun play meets futuristic sophistication. Its a fun mix of drama and comedy with a rather deep following across the world. One of my favorites and sorry that its no longer on.

Anyway, In celebration of the show I made these badges for myself and my friends of their characters dressed in the style of Firefly.

Notes: It all started here. I drew my friend Greg's character, Blaez dressed as Mal. He looks like he's aiming to misbehave. When I drew this one I tried a new technique in coloring where I colored the outlines. The results were pretty cool.

Notes: Here's my guy Sid dressed as the character Jayne. Because of Jayne I named my car Vera and have a strong dislike for guys like Simon. Jayne's a tough guy with a teeny tiny voice of morality way down deep.

Notes: Of course I couldn't do these badges without drawing Cougari. So here she is dressed as a version of Kaylee, but more of my own version where the Jayne Hats went mainstream. She's wearing her Jayne hat and has a little cookie print t-shirt under her flight suit.

I've done about 20 of these and have a few more left to finish, but this is a taste of them. Hope you all enjoyed.

New Year, New Me

I can't believe I neglected to post here for so long.  I said to myself I would post here every day.  Since I neglected to do that, I will make some sort of new promise.  I will post at least ONE sketch every day.  It could be anything from a quick pass at a particular toon to a full blown development series on a character I've created.  My new pledge is for a Sketch-A-Day style blog with some finished works mixed in.

I have a TON of sketches to post, so I will start with something awesome.

Notes: A short time ago I laid eyes on a piece by Tracy Butler called: Lackadaisy Expressions . When I saw it I was recently in a funk wherein I found my inspiration fading. So I picked up my stylus and started doodling. Before too long I had a page of expressions that simply worked. I like to think Cougari is the most expressive part of my mind. I stretch her, squish her, pull on her and somehow she always turns out 'this way'.

Drawn in Open Canvas 1.1 and put together in Photoshop.

Notes: If anyone here has seen Despicable Me or has the soundtrack, there is a song in it called Unicorns and its sung by the little girl Agnes. IT IS THE MOST ADORABLE SOUND IN THE WORLD. I can't stop listening to it!

New Year!

SO. Here we are in a new year and a new decade. Is it time to start over, or is it time to revisit the past? I think it's a bit of both for me. As I reside on the path of my own style and my own artistic path, I find myself going back and looking at what made me what I am now. So here I am, on my birthday posting a bit of work that I have been keeping for myself recently. Enjoy!



Image Title: Chipmunk Doodles
Notes: This is my take on Alvin from the chipmunks if the new CGI version met with a 2d version. The chipmunks are sort of my favorite cartoon characters ever. I remember the first designs of them I had ever seen. The 70's held a sort of angular over simplified look to them. Earlier than that they even looked like 'real chipmunks', IE using chipmunk markings. My favorite designs for them by far were the 80s and 90s where they got a little bit more complex while being simplified at the same time. Ross Bagdasarian would be proud knowing how far his creations have come! This is my homage to Alvin, expect the others soon.

Discovery

I have learned the magic of brushpens. Artists like Henrieke use them for the purposes of giving some great line width and shape. I figured its been ages since I've worked in real media, so I'll try my hand at it. SO here is the result!! Click the images for larger views!

Notes: These are some headshot doodles of Orla, Cougari and Sid and inked in brush pen. I really REALLY dig the thickness of the line in places and the thin-ness in others. It's pretty much the most AWESOME thing I've encountered. I was messing with expressions on this as well. I find that this style works for HAPPY FACE best, but the others look good too!

Notes: Once again, trying out expressions. Did a little bit of shading in the tail, the far leg and the far shoulder. It's not very noticeable, but I really dig the effect you get with it.

Notes: I was listening to the Enchanted Soundtrack the other day and was inspired to draw this! Rarely is it that Cougari will put on a dress, but I have it on good authority that when she's in need of showing her girly side, she goes all out. Obviously.

Notes: Cougari is decked out in her finest Dracula Costume and ready to go Trick or Treating with the best of em! This image is inspired by some ideas I've had as well as the ideas of Jen Seng for the costume aforementioned.

Updates!

Here's a bit of an update to let you know how I'm doing lately. I've had a cold for the last week, which has had me under the weather. I did a few doodles in OC which I've posted up here, and am currently sketching the last of my model sheet work so I can begin inking and coloring.

There are still about 3 weeks to preorder your Cougari Plush. Some of you already had, but not nearly as many as had expressed interest in her before I ordered her. Status on her, I received pictures of her all tagged up, the whole shipment ready to come to me. I ordered shipping cartons, I finished making the print that will only be an exclusive with the plush preorders and just need to make sure I have enough postage ready to get them all mailed out. Notes: A couple of weeks ago, Family Guy had its premier where on it there was a bit about two minutes long where everything looked as if it had been animated by Disney. Aside from the usual "Disney Hates Jews" joke they pulled at the end of it, it was rather beautifully done and a great homage to the business. Here's a quick OC doodle in that style.
